Frequently Asked Questions — Hands On Therapeutic Massage
Have questions before your first visit? Here's everything you need to know about what to expect when you work with Damien.
What makes Hands On Therapeutic Massage different from a typical massage?

Most massage therapists start working the moment you get on the table. At Hands On Therapeutic Massage, every session begins with a consultation and assessment before any hands-on work begins. Damien conducts a visual and physical assessment to identify what's actually causing your pain or limiting your movement — not just where it hurts, but why. That assessment drives everything that happens in the session. The result is targeted, clinical work with a specific purpose rather than a general relaxation massage.
Q:
I've had massage before and it didn't help. Why would this be different?

This is one of the most common things new clients say. General massage addresses the surface — it works the area that hurts. Clinical therapeutic massage works the cause. Most chronic pain and restricted movement is driven by tension patterns that start somewhere other than where you feel the discomfort. Damien's approach identifies those patterns, traces them to their origin, and systematically unwinds them using trigger point therapy, deep tissue work, and pin-and-stretch techniques. If previous massage gave you temporary relief but the problem kept coming back, this is likely why — and this approach is designed to address that directly.
Q:
What happens during my first visit?

Damien will meet you at the door and guide you to his private suite inside Image Studios. You'll complete a brief intake form so he can document your history and keep session notes. From there, Damien will ask what's bringing you in and begin a visual and physical assessment — observing how your body moves, identifying restricted areas, and locating the source of your discomfort. Once the assessment is complete, he'll explain exactly what he found and walk you through his plan before the session begins. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions, share any areas you want avoided, and discuss your comfort preferences before anything starts.
Q:
Who is this type of massage best suited for?
Hands On Therapeutic Massage is ideal for people dealing with chronic pain, limited range of motion, post-injury recovery, or conditions that haven't responded to general massage or other treatments. Damien regularly works with desk workers, athletes, post-surgical recovery clients, and anyone experiencing neck pain, back pain, sciatica, shoulder dysfunction, hip pain, knee pain, or restricted mobility. If you've been through physical therapy but still aren't moving or feeling the way you should, this is often the right next step.
Q:
Do I have to undress completely?

No. You undress to your comfort level — always. Damien will leave the room while you undress and get settled on the table. You will be properly draped throughout the entire session and only the area being worked on will be uncovered at any time.
Q:
Q:
Will the session be painful?

Clinical therapeutic work can involve some discomfort, particularly when working through trigger points or deeply held tension. Damien will communicate with you throughout the session and always works within your tolerance. Most clients describe the sensation as productive discomfort — pressure that feels like it's doing something — rather than sharp or unpleasant pain. You should always communicate if something doesn't feel right and Damien will adjust immediately.
Q:
How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the nature and duration of your condition. Some clients experience significant relief after a single session. Others with long-standing chronic issues benefit from a series of sessions to progressively work through layered tension patterns. After your first visit Damien will give you an honest assessment of what he found and a realistic expectation of what ongoing care might look like for your specific situation. There is no pressure to commit to anything before you've experienced the work.
Q:
What are your qualifications?

Damien Johnson is a Texas Licensed Massage Therapist (License #MT111720) who graduated magna cum laude from ATI Career Institute in August 2010. He has been in clinical practice for 15 years, specializing in pain relief, muscle dysfunction, and therapeutic bodywork. He has spent that time continuously studying human movement, developing his clinical assessment approach, and refining the techniques that produce consistent results for his clients.
Q:
Where are you located and how do I book?

Hands On Therapeutic Massage is located inside Image Studios at 785 Cross Timbers Rd, Suite 124, Flower Mound, TX 75028. Sessions are by appointment only. You can book online using the Book Now button on this page, or call or text Damien directly at 940.783.2690.
Q:
What is your cancellation policy?

24 hours advance notice is required when cancelling or rescheduling an appointment. This allows the opportunity for another client to take that time. If you are unable to provide 24 hours notice, the full session fee will be charged and must be paid prior to your next appointment. Damien understands that unexpected situations arise — if something comes up, reach out as soon as possible and he will do his best to work with you.
